南宋时期七月的一天，杭州城最繁华的街市突然失火。火借风势，风助火威，数以万计的房屋商铺陷入迅猛蔓延的火海之中。
有一位裴姓富商，苦心经营了大半辈子的几间当铺和珠宝店，也恰在火势最凶猛的闹市之中。几十年的心血眼看着毁于一旦，但是他并没有让伙计和奴仆冲进火海，舍命抢救珠宝财物，而是从容不迫地指挥他们迅速撤离。那一副不慌不忙、听天由命的神态，令众-惑不解。
大火烧了数日之后，终于被扑灭了，但大半个最繁华的街市墙倒房塌，一片狼籍，化为废墟，曾经车水马龙的杭州冷清了许多，
在大火还没有被扑灭的时候，裴姓富商已经派人到长江沿岸以平价购回大量木材、毛竹、砖瓦、石灰等建筑用材。当这些建材像小山一样堆起来的时候，他又归于沉寂，整天品茶饮酒，逍遥自在，好像失火压根儿与他毫无关系。
没过多久，朝廷颁旨：重建杭州繁华的街市，凡经营销售建筑用材者一律免税。
裴姓商人趁机抛售建材，获利巨大，其数额远远大于被火灾焚毁的财产。
1976年8月11日，美国有位经营肉类食品的老板，在报纸上看到一则似乎毫不起眼的消息：墨西哥的肉食牲畜发生了类似瘟疫的流行病。他立即想到，以往墨西哥的瘟疫一旦流行起来，很快就会传到美国。而美国与墨西哥相邻的两个州又恰恰是肉食品的主要供应基地。如果发生瘟疫蔓延到美国，美国与墨西哥的肉类食品供应必然会紧张，肉价也必然会飞涨。
于是，他派人去墨西哥探得真情之后，立即调集大量资金购买大批菜牛和肉猪饲养起来。过了不久，墨西哥的瘟疫果然蔓延到了美国的这两个州，市场肉价立即飞涨。时机成熟了，他趁机大量售出菜牛和肉猪，净赚数百万美元。
1995年年初，日本发生了大地震。这次大地震使该地区的生产几乎陷于瘫痪。当时，各国大多数报刊都对此作了较为详细的报道。
外行看热闹，内行看门道。北京有位叫金萍的女士从中“悟”出了商机：大阪的新日本钢铁厂已经完全停产，至少半年才能恢复，而该巨型钢铁厂生产出的优质冷轧薄钢板每年向我国出口至少50万吨，而且在我国钢材市场上甚受欢迎。她立即把这信息和以前掌握的有关数据资料，传给了江苏省一家钢材销售公司。该钢材销售公司经理马上调集人力财力，吃进了5千吨优质冷轧薄钢板，比-公司抢先一大步。
果不其然，优质冷薄钢板因货源紧缺，每吨涨了100至400元。该钢材销售公司一下子赚了近百万元！经理先生挺豪爽，到年底支付了金萍女士1万元人民币的信息费。（蒋光宇）
